Server based slot machines

From various reports a good deal of the research dollar of IGT, Bally and WMS Industries is being spent in the area of server based slots gaming. What do you think this will entail? Do you foresee problems with the licensing of these machines?

FUTURE IS SERVED

Server-based gaming is wave of slot future -- provided it catches on

By HOWARD STUTZ
REVIEW-JOURNAL
Despite nearly a half-decade of development and millions of dollars invested in research and testing, slot machine manufacturers are still a few years away from bringing server-based gaming -- often referred to as downloadable technology -- to casino floors.

Wall Street has viewed the technology, which could let casino operators better manage their slot machine area and have greater flexibility in what they can offer customers, as the next wave in gambling.

Conceivably, downloadable technology would allow casino managers to change a slot machine's games, denominations, bonus payouts and promotions from a central computer server rather than requiring technicians to perform the work manually.

Investors believe equipment makers will harvest a financial windfall from a cycle in which older games are supplanted by newer models. Profits could be similar to the monetary heyday the manufacturers experienced earlier in the decade when cashless gaming -- ticket in-ticket out technology -- energized a mass replacement of slot machines and fueled record earnings and chart-topping stock prices for game providers.

Server Based Gaming

In reality server based gaming is not unlike online gaming. SB will be a localised version of online played in the property but with many of the same atributes as online. SA's regulators are still to finalise there Regulations and Rules around this issue but we believe they will pass legislation to allow it to be implemented. The issue for the operators is what will be the business model. We are skeptical when it comes to participation by suppliers especially at the rates they currently charge and the advent of SB could mean a complete overhaul of our business model. Other than investment costs the suppliers do not have the level of industrial relations or infrastructue maintenance efforts the operators have to deal with, whilst it can be said their innovations increase our revenue their business model stagnates our returns. There is also the issue now that the regulators are reviewing the suppliers level of participation and may require the suppliers to apply for operator licenses, a cost they will no doubt try to pass on to the industry.

Ian is there a spell check in her samewhore for those of us who arse delicous?

Technical innovation, slots in the same sentence - that'll set alarm bells at British Gambling Commission.

"Conceivably, downloadable technology would allow casino managers to change a slot machine's games, denominations, bonus payouts and promotions from a central computer server rather than requiring technicians to perform the work manually."

GC Internal memo - initial thoughts on action plan:

Have to get the problem gambling academics do an impact study on likely consequences to vulnerable customers (ie anyone who visits a casino cos they must have a gambling problem - right?), engage in a lengthy consultation (gotta check it out with faith groups and other stakeholders - right?) exercise before issuing a new code of practice which will be stultifying complicated and designed to remove any economic advantage. Oh and pass the cost of all this onto the industry through increased licence fees.

Progress...deregulation...
