Arrow Holland in the 70's & 80's

A generation ago there were literally hundreds of British casino staff employed in the now closed unofficial Dutch casinos.

Hand's up all those who ventured out there.

OK, I can start typing again

This period is now acquiring something of an historical aura in part because some of the most well known (notorious) individuals in the Dutch underworld were joined by older more experienced hands from the U.S. and elsewhere. The Cabala fire on the 16th December 1983 that killed 13 people was perhaps a turning point and it remains the worst single tragedy in the history of casino gaming in Europe.

Let's have a look back shall we and Forum members are welcome to post links. If you have them please feel free to send on images from the properties or operations.

To start things off, below is a YouTube video in Dutch (part 1 of 4) which has sections detailing the partnership between Maurits de Vries and the Cellini brothers.

A couple of former Amsterdam properties

I took these two images in 2004 and 2009 respectively and they show both ex-venues being refurbished - the Mata Hari and Femina. The Cabala was on the same Canal as the MH but the location appears to be simply apartments now with no plaque or other sign remembering the 1983 fire.

Cabala

Ok, so this is ages ago.

I just stumbled on this forum.

I was in the Cabala fire. Are there any other croupiers out there who survived this?

Here's how the AP in the U.S. reported the Cabala tragedy.

December 1983 Cabala Fire

The unamed victims were 5 Dutch, 5 Surinamese, 1 Chinese, 1 Moroccan and 1 Turk.

It has to be said that the only reason there were so many Brit's in Holland and elsewhere throughout the 70's, 80's and 90's was that casino staff in the U.K. were denied the right to earn a decent living after tipping was prohibited. It was a policy that unfortunately lasted until 2005 before common sense finally prevailed.

Impact of 1968 Gaming Act

Yes the Cellini's were in London first....(hence the 1968 Gaming act). After London....ended up in Germany and Holland. For many years were associacted in Holland with the Ajoub family........of course, they were all 'nice' people. Wonderful Amsterdam....be nice and make a few quid. In 365 days a year......i had 53 days off, basically sleeping before i was back on my cards.
