Cool Chemin de Fer in France

Casino style gambling as we've seen only took off in the early 60's.

So assuming one was from a certain social class where could we have a Punt prior to that ?. Perhaps we might have received an invitation to attend private games as organised by the late John Aspinall or we could possibly head to the French coast for the weekend.
